Cody Compound kite being assembled by Army soldiers (although made under contract for four sets of four kites for the Royal Navy; see Alexandra Palace images for the sets). Kites used for wireless telegraphy trials by RN - PRO references. Note a) that on 1st April 1903 Trials began on H.M.S. Hector. There was squally weather with rain. These two days successful in demonstrating the value of kites for lifting an aerial wire for wireless transmitters. Assume that the Compound kites were used. Note b) 17th June 1903. Four sets of kites ordered, each set comprising of four kites with small winch, wires, and tackle complete. The kites are being supplied for trial to the following ships; 'Majestic', 'Doris', 'Revenge', and 'Good Hope'. Officers and men from these ships had been undertaking instructions in London in the use of the kites. Soldiers uniforms make date of image uncertain as this style of dress may be later.
