Language: English Description: "I first experienced the wonder and beauty of Malaysian Wau at the Malaysia Week Exposition held in Adelaide, South Australia, in 1977. This cultural event included a Malaysian village complete with shadow puppets, tops, batik, music and food. All I could afford to purchase was a small rice paper kite that I now know was a type of Layang-layang.

At the time my wife and I had our own kite shop as well as manufacturing kites for wholesale distribution. My only reliable kite reference was KITE CRAFT by Newman and Newman. It listed Malay kites but there was little relationship between their photo and the "art forms" that I had seen. A friend lent me Will Yolen's THE COMPLETE BOOK OF KITES AND KITE FLYING but all I learnt was that kites may have originated in the Malay region. There was never anything to indicate if those beautiful Wau were flyable kites or just wall decorations.

Over the years I have seen references to "Wau Bulan" kites but nothing to catch my interest. Since 1986 there has even been a small "Wau Bulan" hanging on my wall that I gained in trade with a travel agent. She had hand-carried it from Malaysia as a gift for her grand children but no one can get it to fly."
