Japanese yakko kite by Mikio Toki, handpainted washi with bamboo spars wrapped in washi.
Commissioned by the Drachen Foundation.
"The yakko-dako ("servant" kite) has a framework made up of three long ribs, with futai (wind pockets). It is elaborately painted to depict a male servant with outstretched arms. Although it is closely associated with Edo, whether it originated there is uncertain."
Excerpt from Masaaki Modegi's The Making of Japanese Kites: Tradition Beauty and Creation. 2007.
