Language: English Description: We designed the Getty/UCLA Summer Institute for Knowledge Sharing held in Los Angeles, August 2-6, 1999, to bring together museum, library, and archive professionals in an effort to help foster the emerging cadre of cultural heritage "knowledge sharing specialists," whose work is increasingly affected b advances in computing, networking and media technologies. The course drew nearly eighty participants (and a long waiting list) from these fields and those of higher education, history, research, government, and philanthropy.

The following summary (organized by each day of the five-day course) recalls who came and what happened. Texts of several speaker's remarks, as well as Web site URLs for institutions, projects, people, and resources noted throughout the course, are in the Appendix for further exploration. In general, we designed the intesive course to begin wiht broad sweeping statements, followed by increasingly theoretical and practical sessions, and to conclude with an intensive workshop on the overarching issues of collaboration. To help alleviate mid-week fatigue, short excursions took participants to one of seven local museums, libraries, and archives on Wednesday afternoon. The first and last days of the course were held at the Getty Center and the mid-week sessions were conducted at UCLA.

In addition to a version of this Summary, texts of several speaker's remarks as well as the aforementioned Web site URLs may also be found on the Summer Institute Web site at: http://www.getty.edu/gateway/events/summe
