ISBN: 62-17517 Language: English Description: This book reminds us that not all the contrails in the air world were made by fliers. Whittle's jet engine and Goddard's rocket engine were more significant than any flight except for the first one. For example, too, Churchill and Eisenhower were both pilots, but they will be remembered for leadership in politics and war. However, their interest and experience in flight may well have shaped some of their great command decisions. It is clear also that the dimensions of aerospace exploration are changing. Heretofore the airways were generally horizontal, parallel to the earth's surface. As we probe for Mars, the moon and the stars, flight paths move toward the vertical.
There are many unique and commendable features in this book. It contains more than four hundred prints, drawings, and photographs of most of the outstanding air men and air vessels from the mythological ages to our time. The gliders of Cayley and Lilienthal, the first balloon, the first plane, the planes which set the records for distance, endurance, altitude, speed- all and many more are here. If a picture equals a thousand worlds, this is indeed a library of flight. The captions to these prints, drawings, and pictures have been done with care and a regard for historical accuracy.
