Since 1989, the city of Ahmedabad has hosted the International Kite Festival as part of the official celebration of Uttarayan, bringing master kite makers and flyers from all over the world to demonstrate their unique creations and wow the crowds with highly unusual kites. 2014 marks the 26th year of celebration.
This exhibition focuses on the life and work of Chinese-American artist Tyrus Wong - a celebrated painter, muralist, kite maker, lithographer, Hollywood sketch artist, calligrapher, ceramicist, and Disney Legend. At age 102, Wong is still a practicing artist today.
Every year in the highlands of Guatemala, the town of Sumpango celebrates Day of the Dead by flying kites—massive kites, sometimes 45 feet in diameter, and smaller kites, flown majestically down the side of a mountain.
Fort Worden Kitemakers Conference is a wonderful gathering of kite makers from all around the world. It is an opportunity to learn, share information, and socialize with kite friends, new and old. We strive to have classes for everyone. Each year our curriculum committee puts together an exceptional list of teachers with classes to accommodate all skill levels and kiting interests. Kite-making is a remarkably efficient teaching tool, integrating subjects like science, technology, engineering, arts and math within a single lesson. Experts from the world-class Drachen Foundation will provide a lecture and exhibit on the history of kites and a 3-hour hands-on workshop teaching the design and construction of four levels of kites. With their new-found skills, Kite Masters will write and submit lesson plans and toolkits to align with the Utah core and for future use by Utah educators.
Program
Interesting presentations on the topic of historical kites and more. Participants will build a 3-winged Brogden of about 2x2m. Number of participants is limited to 50.
