University of Colorado researcher who used kites in the mid-1990s to sample atmospheric phenomenon. Balsley employed a wing-shaped ferry (apparatus which uses the kite’s line to move up and down) to lift and return instruments while a large lifting kite flew overhead. The system was also used to loft audio equipment to listen to feeding bats. As a professor, Balsley accumulated a sizable bibliography which references historical scientific kite citations.
