Having worked extensively throughout Asia, David started to lead tours for kite fliers in the 1980s, first to Japan, then later to China. For many, this was their first exposure to ethnic kites. Among his kite tourists was actress Gloria Stuart (Titanic, Best Actress nomination), a lifelong fan of kites. In 1980, The Checkleys almost-single-handedly hosted the third American Kitefliers Association Convention in Seattle, Washington.
