There are several stories about his attempt to steal the golden dolphins that adorned the roof of Nagoya Castle. Ishikawa's motivation is not known; in this story he becomes the outlaw who steals from the rich to help the poor. This Robin Hood-type character is popular in Japanese tales. The dragon, who in this story thwarts the harsh verdict of history, was venerated as a supernatural being in Japan and China for centuries.
After Ishikawa's daring thievery, the Shogun forbade the construction of large kites, and iron cages were built around the dolphins. Later, however, someone else did manage to steal them.
