Name refers to an "open keel elliptical kite." The outline and its laced binding to the sail with an air gap between, is emphasized by a bouncy performance in the air. The ellipse tends to stretch while the open keel tail, being attached to the sail trailing edge, floats up and down as it stabilizes the kite into the wind and the extended spine bobbles in sympathy with the overall movement of the kite. The originals were 4 ft. 6 in. span. See the New Edition Kites book by Ron Moulton and Pat Lloyd for detailed drawings.
