Madiot’s cellular kite, with an internal, umbrella-like structure, won the French competition for man-lifting systems in 1909. However, due to Madiot’s untimely death in 1910, it would be Saconney’s system that would be adopted by the French military. He is considered the first French aviator killed while serving in the military.
