Summay:

Cody in cowboy hat and seated in wicker kite seat operating controls. Kite is a large Extended Short Wing War Kite. The wing extensions are short pitch which gives the impression that it is a standard War Kite. The controls operate through an extended rod/fairlead assembly mounted to the lower centre cell. Spars are tied off on upper wing tips. Same as 283, 432, 433, 434, 601, 796. Image 601 is best and shows hilly industrial background and shows that the kite was only a few feet in the air. Site could be Rawtenstall, Lancashire in December 1902? A line drawing of this image appeared in the Irish News and Belfast Morning News for 11th February 1903 in connection with Cody's proposed crossing of the Irish Sea by kite.
