Summay:
SARA JANE BOYERS is a California fine art photographer who, after successful careers in the music and publishing industries, has returned to a serious focus on her photography. In her work Boyers searches for that iconic element of ordinary experience that defines the whole, choosing to render it subtly and with a sense of beauty that is provocative and demanding.
Her recent solo exhibition at the Craig Krull Gallery - FINDING CHINATOWN, showcasing her decade-long project on the Chinatowns of the United States & Canada - was critically acclaimed. Other work has been included in museums, galleries and photo festivals including a GETTY PST exhibition at the Vincent Price Art Museum; Western Australia's FOTOFREO Biennial; DESIGN/REACTION at the Pasadena Museum of California Museum of Art; as well as two MOPLA exhibitions, the second organized and co-curated by Boyers; and SUMMER MIX, also co-curated by Boyers for LACMA's Wallis Annenberg Photography Department.
Other continuing projects include GRIDLOCK, a series of photographs shot from Boyers' car window while stuck in traffic; DETROIT: DEFINITION, a study of her birth city as it again arises, using family landmarks as the construct for photographic exploration; SACRED, SILENT & WAITING, a contemplation of light, empty space and presence; and REVISIT_RENEW_NEW, an architectural exploration that also includes the 747 HOUSE, an architecturally significant experiment in repurposing. She is the recipient of two 2011 and four 2012 IPA Honorable Mentions for her work.
Her photographs reside in public and private collections and are published in magazines, books and respected online media.
Sara Jane Boyers is also a writer/editor with books and poetry published. Her first book, LIFE DOESN'T FRIGHTEN ME, the award-winning pairing of Jean-Michel Basquiat's expressive artwork with a stirring 1978 poem by Maya Angelou, was conceived and designed by Boyers almost two decades ago and recently called a "contemporary classic." In connection with the Basquiat touring retrospective, Boyers conducted artist workshops based upon LIFE at the invitation of the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles (MOCA) and the Museum of Fine Arts Houston (MFAH).
In addition to photographic publication, Boyers contributes to print journals and websites, makes keynotes and maintains ongoing newsletter/blogs at SaraJaneBoyersAloud Blog, DETROIT:DEFINITIONBlog, FINDINGCHINATOWNBlog & TeenPowerPolitics.com, a popular resource on issues and events.
As a professional photographer, Sara Jane Boyers was introduced to Tyrus as she was working on a long term photographic project on the North American Chinatowns. From here she got to know Tyrus and look further into his life of 102 years (He will be 104 on September 23, 2014)
This is a remarkable book of photography documenting not only a special individual but his work and passion for making and flying kites.
