ISBN: 0-939009-68-4 Language: English Description: When Old Patchwork Quilts was published in 1929, Ruth Finley was only the second author to devote a book to the subject. Journalist, feminist and political activist, Finley is remembered best for this work because she believed that the study of women's folk art illuminates women's history. For that reason plus the quality of her 16 years of research, the book, with its 200 photographs and diagrams, endures.

This third edition, enriched by eight pages of color plates, has the added benefit of a knowing introduction by Barbara Brackman. Terms Finley used are now standard descriptions for pattern and style analysis, and her chapters on patterns are an important reference on names and structure of designs.

Despite other resources today- such a s Brackman's own Clues in the Calico and her pattern encyclopedias- "this book," she writes, "will continue to serve as a primer... educating another generation about quilts and the women who made them."
