ISBN: 0 646 17457 6 Language: English Description: "This publication has been created to coincide with the centenary of the most popularly remembered event on the beach below Stanwell Park when Lawrence Hargrave was lifted some sixteen feet under a train of box kites During that same year he also left the ground, momentarily, aboard a tandem winged hang glider. Each of these events is described, as well as the kites and experiments which were conducted by Hargrave during his journey of aeronautical discovery as he made these brief attempts at flight. The ultimate Australian example of Hargrave's box kites was portrayed in the biplane hang glider built by George Augustine Taylor in 1909.
The content of this book includes the kites and fixed wing gliders designed and/or built by Hargrave up until the end of 1994, when he made his ascent under the box kites All of the data used to reproduce the drawings and diagrammes herein was gleaned from copies of the original notes written by Hargrave. Fortunately he maintained excellent diaries of his work, so that others may benefit from his labours. A full set of these notes is held by both the Powerhouse Museum and the Mitchell Library in Sydney. The material in the Mitchell Library was contained in a series of microfilms, held under the reference numbers FM4/1057 to FM4/1062 inclusive. A list of all reference material used in the preparation of this book is included in the bibliography."
