GOOD-BYE SEATTLE, THANKS AGAIN FOR EVERYTHING.
AFTER THREE WEEKS IN SEATTLE, I WAS GIVING STRANGERS DIRECTIONS ON WHERE TO GO AND I KNEW IT WAS TIME FOR ME TO MOVE ON – AFTER ALL DETROIT WASN’T GETTING ANY CLOSER AND MOSS WAS GROWING ON THE “SNAIL’S” TIRES. WITH FOND FAREWELLS, A “WKA” TEE
SHIRT, AND A BLINKING ELECTRIC HEADBAND (FOR NIGHT FLYING) I WAS ON MY WAY NORTH TO VANCOUVER.
I FLEW KITES WITH ART ROSS AND HUGH HARRISON AT VANIER PARK, A BEAUTIFUL KITE SITE WITH A PANORAMIC VIEW OF STANLEY PARK AND NORTH VAN’S RESIDENTIAL AREA ACROSS A WELL USED HARBOUR. WIND CONDITIONS FOR THIS TIME OF YEAR WERE MARGINAL WITH DELTA KITES BEING THE ‘KITE DE JOUR’.
SEVERAL DAYS LATER I HOPPED ABOARD A FERRY FOR VANCOUVER ISLAND AND FOUND OUT THE HARD WAY WHY THEY CONSIDER PARTS OF THIS ISLAND A RAIN FOREST. I HAD HEARD THAT THERE WAS A GREAT PLACE TO FLY KITES ON THE WEST COAST OF THE ISLAND CALLED “LONG BEACH” SO I DECIDED TO TAKE A RIDE OVER BEFORE MOVING ON TO VICTORIA. WELL LONG BEACH TURNED OUT TO BE A LONG WAY BECAUSE AS SOON AS I LEFT THE FERRY IT STARTED TO RAIN AND DIDN’T LET UP FOR TWO DAYS. I SPENT ONE NIGHT CAMPING IN
THE RAIN AND IN THE MORNING HEADED OUT TO LONG BEACH THRU MORE RAIN. THE ISLAND’S GEOGRAPHY PROVIDES A BEAUTIFUL RIDE THRU FOREST AND EVENTUALLY A MOUNTAIN RANGE BEFORE DROPPING DOWN TO THE PACIFIC RIM NATIONAL PARK AND LONG BEACH RECREATION AREA. WHEN I FINALLY DID ARRIVE THE WEATHER CLEARED AND I COULD SEE WHY PEOPLE ARE SO ENTHRALLED WITH THIS BEACH. IT MUST HAVE BEEN A MILE LONG AND APPEARED QUITE DESERTED IN THE WAKE OF THE PASSING STORM. I DIDN’T HAVE TIME TO CAMP OVER AND DECIDED TO HEAD BACK TO VICTORIA,A 4 TO 5 HOUR RIDE. AS SOON AS I GOT ON THE ROAD IT STARTED TO RAIN AND DIDN’T LET UP UNTIL I ARRIVED IN VICTORIA AT 11 PM THAT EVENING. I STOPPED AT THE FIRST HOTEL I COULD FIND TO DRY OUT AND HAVE A HOT SHOWER AND ASKED MYSELF IF I REALLY KNEW WHAT I WAS DOING.
THE MORNING BROUGHT SOME SUNSHINE AND I DECIDED TO CALL GRANT “LIMPLY” MADILL, GOURMET CHEF OF “LE MASION TUG BOAT” AND KITE MAKER PAR EXCELLANCE. I HAD HEARD THAT HE HAD RECENTLY HAD AN ACCIDENT WITH HIS MOTORCYCLE WITH AN OUT-OF-TOWNER TURNING LEFT IN FRONT OF GRANT, LEAVING HIM WITH HIS RIGHT LEG IN A CAST UP TO HIS HIP. (I HOPE YOU’RE BACK ON YOUR FEET BY THE TIME YOU READ THIS, WE’VE GOT A BIKE TRIP PLANNED FOR OHIO NEXT YEAR, AND YOU BETTER BE IN SHAPE) I WAS QUICKLY ACCEPTED FOR THE CHAUFFER JOB AND HAD A GREAT TIME BUZZING AROUND VICTORIA IN A FOUR-WHEELER.
I WAS ABLE TO STAY WITH THE INFAMOUS BERNARD STEWART OF FLEXI-FOIL FAME AND ALSO THE BRAINS BEHIND THE “VICTORIA KITE CLUB” WHICH OFFERS A PATCH, A CARD AND NEWSLETTER FOR LIFE FOR THE SUM OF 10$ CANADIAN , CAN YOU BELIEVE THAT? WHILE STAYING WITH BERNARD I HEARD ABOUT SOME OF THE INCREDIABLE STUNTS THAT HE AND BARRY HEIBERT HAVE ATTEMPTED WHICH INCLUDE CROSSING THE SOUND IN A RUBBER RAFT POWERED BY FLEXI-FOILS. SOME OF THE ATTEMPTS HAVE ENDED UP IN THE PAPERS AS WELL AS HAVING BARRY END UP IN THE HOSPITAL. I GUESS MARY ELLEN (MRS. HEIBERT) IS KEEPING AN EYE ON BARRY THESE DAYS AND HIS SAILING DAYS ARE OVER, THANK GOODNESS.
BARRY IS ONE OF THE MANY FINE KITEMAKERS OF VICTORIA THAT I RAN INTO WHEN FLYING AT CLOVER POINT AND ENJOYS THE TWO LINE STUNT KITES OF THE FLEXI OR RAINBOW VARIETYS. BEFORE I LEFT I HAD THE OPPURTUNITY TO FLY BARRY’S TRAIN OF 10 FLEXIES WHICH WAS REALLY FUN. JERRY “THE LUMBER MAN” BROUGHT OUT HIS ‘W’ KITE WHICH IS IN THE PELHAM BOOK BUT SCALED UP TO STAND ABOUT 9 FEET TALL, DECORATED WITH THE CANADIAN FLAG AND PUT TOGETHER WITH LOTS OF RUBBER BANDS. BERNARD FLEW A TRAIN OF 5(?) 10 FOOT WIDE FLEXI-FOILS IN SOME GREAT COLORS WHICH HE HAD SAILING ACROSS THE SKY IN GRACEFUL SWEEPS JUST OVER THE GROUND. IT’S SOMETHING TO BE EXPERIENCED. GRANT HAD A FEW OF HIS “ROCKET” KITES AS WELL AS SOME LIGHT WIND TISSUE DELTAS WHICH HE FLEW FROM THE TAILGATE OF HIS CAR. ONE KITE THAT GRANT HAD WHICH I HAD NOT SEEN BEFORE WAS A TISSUE PAPER FIGHTER FROM HONG KONG WHICH FLEW VERY WELL. TOM KOWALCHUK OF THE ‘VICTORIA KITE STORE’ (THE SMALLEST KITE STORE IN THE WORLD) CAME OUT WITH A PAPER CENTIPEDE KITE THAT HE SELLS BY THE FOOT WHICH SEEMED TO FLY GREAT. EVIDENTLY BECAUSE OF THE TRADE RELATIONS THAT CANADA HAS WITH THE ORIENT IT IS EASIER FOR THE CANADIAN KITE INDUSTRY TO IMPORT SOME VARIETYS OF KITES FROM CHINA AND HONG KONG THAN IT IS FOR THE SHOPS IN THE USA. THE FIGHTER KITES OF GRANT’S WERE FROM A SMALL GIFT SHOP IN CHINATOWN IN VANCOUVER AND NOT A KITE SHOP AT ALL.
ON SEPTEMBER 15 I LEFT VICTORIA AND MADE MY WAY DOWN TO SALT LAKE CITY WHERE I MET LARRY AND LIZ FOOTE.
-LARRY HAPPENS TO BE ANOTHER ONE OF US KITER-BIKERS,. ALTHOUGH LARRY IS INTO THE MORE EXOTIC ITALIAN BIKES AND ALSO LIMITED EDITION KITES SUCH AS THE 150 FOOT DRAGON KITES BY HELOISE LOCHMAN, AND A ONE OF A KIND KITES ,SUCH AS A KITE BUILT BY LOIS CLARK WITH THE LOGO FOR ONE OF LARRY’S MOTORCYCLES “LAVERDA” APPLIQUED AS THE DESIGN.
THIS WAS MY FIRST TIME VISITING THE WASATCH MOUNTAIN RANGE THAT BORDERS THE EASTERN BOUNDARY OF SALT LAKE CITY. A TOUCH OF FALL WAS IN THE AIR AND THE SCRUB OAKS WERE JUST BEGINNING TO TURN RED AS THE “QUAKES” SHIMMERED IN GOLDEN YELLOW. A VISIT TO SALT LAKE CITY WOULDN’T BE COMPLETE WITH OUT STOPPING BY PROVO UTAH AND VISITING LOIS CLARK THE TALENTED KITEMAKER WHO’S HURRIKITES ARE WELL KNOW BY THEIR BRIGHT GRAPHICS AND EXCELLENT CRAFTSMANSHIP.
FROM SALT LAKE I TOOK HIGHWAY 40 TO DENVER AND VISITED “HI-FLI KITES” A KITE SHOP RUN BY REZA RAGHEB OUT IN THE MIDDLE OF AURORA , ABOUT 15 MILES OUT OF DOWNTOWN DENVER. REZA IS THE SOLE IMPORTER OF THE VERTICAL VISUAL KITES MADE BY JILLY PELHAM AND DAVE POWAL OF ENGLAND. THESE KITES ARE SOME OF THE MOST UNIQUE DESIGNS AND COLORS THAT I’VE SEEN SO FAR ON THIS JOURNEY, AND WELL WORTH ADDING TO YOUR COLLECTION IF YOU HAVE A FAT BANK ACCOUNT. I PARTICULARILY LIKE THE CLASSIC
ROLLER FOR IT’S FLYABILITY AND UNIQUE COLOR COMBINATIONS.
BOULDER, COLORADO STILL RETAINS IT’S SMALL TOWN ATMOSPHERE AND IS THE HOME OF “INTO THE WIND” A KITE STORE THAT IS EAISLY FOUND ONCE YOU FIND THE NATURAL FOOD RESTRAUNT ON PEARL STREET (THE KITE SHOP IS RIGHT BEHIND IT). THE OWNERS JIM GLASS AND GEORGE EMMONS ALSO HAVE A MAIL ORDER BUSINESS OF THE SAME NAME AND HAVE COME OUT WITH TWO VERSIONS OF A DELTA-CONYNE CALLED THE “DC-6” AND “DC-8”. I WAS WONDERING IF THE “DC” WAS SUPPOSE TO MEAN DENVER COLORADO BUT FORGOT TO ASK. THE WINDS IN THIS AREA ARE QUITE TRICKY TO FLY IN AND I WENT OUT TO TRY MY LUCK WITH THE KITES _I -HAD BROUGHT ALONG AND COULDN’T FLY ANYTHING. GEORGE PUT UP ONE OF HIS “DC”B AND IT WENT UP AND STAYED UP, FIRST CLIMBING THRU LIGHT TURBULANT BREEZE AND THEN TAKING SOME VERY STRONG WIND AT HIGHER ALTITUDES, NOT A BAD TRICK FOR ANY KITE.
ON MY WAY OUT OF TOWN I STOPPED BY THE SKYNASAUR FOLKS IN LOUISVILLE, AND CAUGHT THEM ON THE WAY OUT THE DOOR , THE WIND WAS UP AND THEY HAD CLOSED THE OFFICE TO GO KITE FLYING, SO I TAGGED ALONG TO SEE WHAT THEY WERE UP TO.
THE WINDS WERE BLOWING ABOUT 20 TO 30 MPH AND IT WAS A WARM AND SUNNY DAY WITH FEW CLOUDS. WERE DROVE ABOUT 5 MILES FROM THE OFFICE TO A PLACE THEY CALLED “THE RUINS” THE FORMER LOCATION OF A RESTAURANT THAT BURNED DOWN. THE FIELD ADJACENT TO THE PARKING AREA OF THIS RESTAURANT HAS BEEN DESIGNATED AS “GREEN SPACE” AND IS A BUFFER ZONE OF RANGE LAND SURROUNDING BOULDER AND AN EXCELLENT PLACE TO FLY KITES. IT DOES HAVE A FEW WEEDS AND CATUS BUT YOU CAN’T HAVE
EVERYTHING!! I HAD NEVER FLOWN A SKYNASAUR BEFORE BUT HAD HEARD OF THE KITE IN A NUMBER OF SPORTING GOOD SHOFS AS WELL AS KITE STORES. WHEN THEY SET THEM UP (IT DOESN’T TAKE LONG) AND STARTED FLYING IT WAS INCREDIBLE TO WATCH A KITE DRAG SOMEONE AROUND THE FIELD. THEY CAN REALLY DO THAT, I HAVE FIRST HAND EXPERIENCE. CURRENTLY THE SKYNASAUR FOLKS ARE WORKING ON A SMALLER MODEL WHICH WON’T BE AS DIFFICULT TO HANDLE, AND SHOULD BE OUT LATE ’83 OR SOMETIME IN ’84. THE ONLY
CRITICISM I HAVE ABOUT THE SKYNASAUR IS THE TWISTED NYLON FLYING LINES PROVIDED WITH THE KITE, IT STRETCHES TOO MUCH.
SKYNASAUR HAS DONATED A KITE FOR MY JOURNEY AND IF YOU CARE TO TRY IT OUT WHEN I PASS THRU I WOULD BE MORE THAN HAPPY TO SHOW IT TO YOU.
TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 28, I ARRIVED IN KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI AFTER TWO DAYS ON INTERSTATE 70, KANSAS WAS PRETTY FLAT WITH LOTS OF WIND. IN KCMO I STAYED WITH BILL SHAPIRO AND LYNN REESE, KITE FRIENDS OF CAROL AND THE BIMBO OF S.F. (AFTER MY VISIT, I’AM NOT SURE THEY’RE STILL FRIENDS, BUT I HOPE SO). BILL FLYS ABOUT THREE BLOCKS FROM HIS HOME AND WE TRIED FLYING FOR SEVERAL DAYS BUT THE KANSAS WINDS MUST HAVE STOPPED AT STATELINE. WE WERE ABLE TO FLY SOME LIGHT WIND PARAFOILS AND GRANDMASTERS BUT LITTLE ELSE WOULD COOPERATE. I TOOK IN SEVERAL GUILT SHOWS THAT WERE HAPPENING AND HAD A NICE TIME EXPLORING THIS OASIS IN MIDDLE AMERICA BEFORE HEADING FOR DETROIT AND THE 5TH ANNUAL AKA CONVENTION
FLYING BY NIGHT***********
SOME OF MY MOST INTERESTING FLYING HAS BEEN OCCURING AT NIGHT THESE DAYS. AS THE WINTER MONTHS HAVE DECENDED UPON THE JOURNEY THERE SEEMS TO BE LESS AND LESS DAYLIGHT HOURS TO FLY IN SO IF THE NIGHT WINDS ARE UP, YOU MAY AS WELL TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THEM.
THE FIRST TIME I FLEW AT NIGHT WAS AT THE MARROWSTONE MUSIC CAMP IN WASHINGTON. I WAS WITH JACK VAN GILDER AND WE ATTACHED A SMALL FIREWORKS TO A PARFOIL, LIT IT AND SENT IT UP. IT LOOKED PRETTY GOOD BUT NEEDED TO BE SOMETHING THAT WOULD LAST A LITTLE LONGER LIKE A FLARE FOR ANYONE TO REALLY SEE IT. SINCE ANY TYPE OF FIREWORKS WERE RESTRICTED OFF THE FACILITY WE DIDN’T TRY ANYTHING ELSE THAT EVENING.
ON MY WAY ACROSS KANSAS I CAMPED AT AN INTERSTATE REST AREA AND THE WINDS WERE A GOOD STEADY 12-15 MPH. I COULDN’T LET THEM GO TO WASTE, SO I TOOK OUT MY J-16 CUSTOM AND ATTACHED A FLUORESCENT FLASHLIGHT TO THE BRIDLE POINT. SINCE AN AIRPORT WAS NEAR BY I DID’T FLY TOO LONG WITH THE LIGHT ON, BUT DID TETHER THE KITE FOR A WHILE AFTER REMOVING THE LIGHT.
AFTER THE DETROIT CONVENTION I VISITED ADRIAN CONN IN WINSOR, ONTARIO AND WENT NIGHT FLYING AT A NEARBY SCHOOL YARD. JODY AND I PUT TWO STROB85 INTO THE OUTTER LEGS OF A “SIAMESE FLOWFORM” (ADRIAN ENJOYS BUILDING UNIQUE KITES) AND SENT IT OFF. THE EFFECT WAS EXCELLENT, SINCE THE STROBES WERE BUILT IN CLEAR PLASTIC BOXES THEY COULD BE SEEN FROM ALL ANGLES. THE WEIGHT OF THE STROBES MOST LIKELY EFFECTED THE FLIGHT CHARACTERISTICS AND THE KITE WAS REALLY MOVING AROUND THE NIGHT SKY UNTIL IT FINALLY WENT INTO ONE OF “WHAT DO I DO NOW” DIVES AND EJECTED THE STROBES) JUST BEFORE IMPACT. THE FALLING STROBES LOOKED LIKE TWIN FALLING STARS.
WHEN WE PICKED UP THE PIECES, ONE HAD COMPLETELY SELF—DESTRUCTED AND THE OTHER GOT AWAY WITH MINOR INJURIES.

MY LATEST NIGHT FLYING ADVENTURE WAS A WARM NOVEMBER EVENING IN NEW ENGLAND. THIS TIME I WAS OUT WITH LARRY AND CYNDY , AND WE FLEW TWO LINERS. LARRY HAD A PETER POWELL WITH TWO CYALUME LIGHTSTICKS ON THE CENTER SPAR AND I HAD A STACK OF 6 RAINBOWS WITH A LIGHT STICK ON THE LEAD KITE AND ONE MORE ON KITE #3. CYNDY HELPED LARRY FOR A WHILE AND THEN TOOK A TURN FLYING THE RAINBOWS.
WE HAD TRIED TO FLY WITH AN INTERESTING LOOKING STROBE UNIT LARRY HAD PICKED UP AT A GAS STATION IN MAINE ON ONE OF HIS
TRAVELS. IT’S REALLY A UNIQUE ITEM THAT HAS A FLAT, YES YOU READ CORRECTLY ,FOLKS!, A FLAT 6 VOLT BATTERY. THE BATTERY SLIPS INTO A SLOT BEHIND A YELLOW LENS COVER AND MAKES FOR A VERY COMPACT PACKAGE THAT WEIGHTS ABOUT 40Z. THE UNIT IS CALLED A POLA PULSE, MANUFACTURED BY POLAROID AND COST ABOUT $5.00. ALTHOUGH IT WAS TOO HEAVY FOR THE STUNT KITES IT LOOKS LIKE IT WOULD BE IDEAL FOR SENDING UP IN OTHER TYPES OF KITES.
SO NEXT TIME THE SUN GOES DOWN, DON’T PUT YOUR KITES AWAY, JUST TURN ON YOUR LIGHTS.
